Community: Our Secret Weapon For 2020

self care sunday Nov 16, 2019

Working out has always been an important part of my life and the gym is where I first learned about the power of communities.

Long before cross fit was a thing, I found myself building strong connections with my gym-friends and I eventually began helping them buy and sell their homes. For a long time I was THE Realtor in my gym. I'm sure other agents worked out there but you wouldn't know it because they didn't integrate with the rest of us and thus weren't a part of the community.

These days, it's common place for fitness businesses like cross fit gyms to have strong communities, but when I was a young man at the start of my career, we weren't deliberate about "community building". It just happened naturally. If you had sincere interest in fitness, a bit of curiosity about your fellow gym members and a little sales training, you could do really well for yourself. A person like me was simply called a "good networker".

Now Taylor Swift has Swifties,  Lady...

Earn more money in 2020 by leaving your business

self care sunday Nov 10, 2019

I was 21 when I went to my first conference. It was in Las Vegas and hosted by my coach, who a few months earlier graduated me from his flagship program, Sweathogs. At graduation I was presented with an offer to register for the yearly conference put on by his organization and I jumped at the chance to attend. It was only after the event that I realized the true benefits which included:

  • Referral relationships
  • Sense of belonging
  • Friendships that have lasted a lifetime
  • Encouragement to pursue my biggest dreams
  • Gut checks when needed
  • Tactics that inspired me to take a chance and do things that seem scary

I believe 2020 is going to be a big year for many of us. And this week’s message is designed to inspire you to expand beyond your comfort zone and deliberately put yourself in an environment that is conducive to thinking bigger. Check it out and leave a comment with your favorite event!

Sex and Salesmanship

self care sunday Nov 02, 2019

This week a client of mine who has become a good friend posted her thoughts about the Austin Independent School District’s new sex education policy on Facebook. The post had over 100 comments and I was immediately curious what everyone was writing.

As you can imagine, people definitely had their own opinions. Sex on its own is a hot topic; adding children made it explosive! I don’t have children and I believe that allowed me to read through the comments with an objective distance.

Right way I noticed a few things:

  • Commenters wanted to persuade others to agree with their point of view but they had no clue how to persuade people.
  • Because of that, instead of trying to win people over, they were just trying to win a fight.
  • Not many people (on this thread anyway) seemed to understand the difference between an arguement and a fight.
  • The comments exposed the limiting beliefs the commenters have about sexuality in general.
  • This is similar to what happens when people get into a...

The Importance of Making Mistakes

self care sunday Oct 26, 2019

This week I did a webinar where over 50% of people who registered attended the live session and most people stayed until the very end. That's pretty good in the world of webinars these days!

But it wasn't all perfect. In fact, as soon as it was over, I went into my studio and recorded this week's video. I wanted to capture the raw emotions because I made some silly mistakes and it was the perfect opportunity to show you what I so often tell you - we learn by doing.

Some people insist on learning everything before they do something; which is one of the 7 fatal mistakes I talked about on the webinar that force people to seek a job with a regular paycheck.

Successful people know the only way we really learn is by doing - which means we're going to screw something up along the way. Convincing ourselves we can sit in enough classes to learn it all first will do nothing but keep us stuck right were we are.

That's why I created the ...

This Could Be Why Your Friend Hired Someone Else

self care sunday Oct 19, 2019

One evening recently I was FaceTiming with my partner Jon before bed. Jon still lives in Austin so this is part of our evening ritual until he arrives in California. On this particular evening, he was obviously distracted and not looking into the camera. He was looking over his Facebook advertising metrics and I was like, well jeez I must be pretty boring tonight! Now I always FaceTime with my shirt off! haha!

I started thinking back to what an evening looked like before we had iPhones and Facebook ad campaigns. What exactly did we do?! The memories are wonderful. We made dinner, talked about our day while actually looking at each other, maybe watched an episode of Sex and The City, planned outfits for the next day and right before bed we'd walk the dogs one more time. That last dog walk has long been one of my favorite parts of the day.

And if you go back far enough, there was one other thing we did pre-iPhone; pre-Internet really. We would sit around...

Your Business Uses Macros Just Like Your Body

self care sunday Oct 12, 2019

These days my diet consists of 40% protein, 35% fat and 25% carbs. And although there are wonderful health benefits that come with that formula, I'll just be honest and tell you I mostly want to look good naked! hahaha! That's the real reason anyone diets and exercises, right?!  Anyway those numbers can vary slightly on a daily basis, but as long as over the course of a week I hit the percentages, I'll get the result I want.

For a long time I've sensed the same dynamic happening in business. If properly set nutrition macros make our body look good, property set business macros make our bank account look good! So, I finally sat down and named these business macros I've been conceptualizing and can't wait to hear what you think! Let me know in the comments!

The Most Effective Way I've Ever Found To Hit A Goal

self care sunday Oct 05, 2019

Over the years, I've tried countless ways to effectively hit my goals.

I've done vision boards and spreadsheets.

I've stuck things to my bathroom mirror and to my car dashboard.

I've test drove cars I wanted and tried on Swiss watches in the jewelry store repeatedly while working to earn the money to buy them.

I've even attached 8.5"x11" laminated visuals to my keychain to make sure I never forgot what I was working toward!

And I'm sure if I thought long enough I could remember other little tricks; but nothing has been as powerful as the one thing I focused on personally this week. At first it seems like magic. Then you begin to understand what is going on and learn how to become a master at manifesting the things you want in life. I can't wait to hear what you think about it! When 90 Days Is Really Only 45

self care sunday Sep 28, 2019

Can you believe it's the 4th quarter of 2019 already?! We have 93 days left in the year and so much can be done in that time. Don't believe me? Check this out:

  • The Marines make new recruits into Marines with their boot camp that lasts just under 90 days.
  • Mozart composed two piano trios; a violin sonata; two piano sonatas, including his most famous; his last three symphonies and three other pieces of music in 90 days in 1788.
  • On July 8, 1914, the Boston Braves baseball club had a record of 29-40, dead last in the National League. Over the next 90 days they won a whopping 74% of their games to win the league pennant and eventually a World Series championship.
  • A Moscow architectural firm will build you an environmentally friendly, 1,300-square-foot home within 90 days of order.

But alas, this is real estate sales and we don't really have 93 days left in the year. I'm not trying to put you into a panic, but we really only have about 45 days left to impact production numbers this year....

Two Ways To Quickly Discover Your Superpower

self care sunday Sep 21, 2019

When you were a kid did you tell everyone you were going to be a Realtor when you grew up? Hahaha! Okay, so like three of you may have, but most of us didn't even know what a Realtor was when we were kids.

As a boy I was convinced I was going to be a pilot! Not only did that sound great on the playground, I got to dream about being a pilot while flying jets in video games and gluing together plastic models that I'd hang from my bedroom ceiling with fishing string!

My very first memory of anything real estate related was sitting on the floor in a Coldwell Banker conference room while my mom was making an offer on a house. At least that's what I think was happening because we moved shortly after. I was in fifth or sixth grade at the time and couldn't care less about real estate.

When I got my license, it was because I wanted to make money. I still didn't care that much about houses. Which turns out was totally fine because what my clients really wanted was for me to use my SUPERPOWER....

Why You Should Use Caution When Asking Other Agents For Advice

self care sunday Sep 07, 2019

One of the main reasons I don’t often jump into Facebook groups for real estate these days is because I almost always bounce out of them thinking: “Jesus it’s the blind leading the blind in there”.

Now, people no doubt get some benefit from the informal group mentoring these groups can provide. But when I’m wearing my coaching hat, and I see someone pose a question on a sales topic, the typical advice I read isn’t likely to help much.

You see, when I was learning to sell, I had to turn to my broker; herself a seasoned veteran and lifelong student of sales or my coach, an industry sales training legend. And while agents in the office certainly helped each other, we turned to trusted sources for guidance when it mattered.

These days when someone posts a question on social media, they get a list of “here’s what I do” responses and left trying to sort it all out wondering if one other responses will work in their specific...
